Drenthe Hunebedden
Near to Center Parcs Huttenheugte lies the 'Hunebedden Highway'. The Highway snakes its way across the province of Drenthe, and is full of so-called ‘dolmens’ or 'megalithic tombs'. These are impressive, silent and ancient remants of the people who lived in the Netherlands some five thousand years earlier.
The enormous boulders originate from Sweden and Finland. During the ice age, they drifted, via enormous glaciers, all the way to Drenthe. Our prehistoric ancestors used the dolmens as tombstones for their dead.
In the Hunebed Centre in Borger , thanks to film, multimedia and life-sized maquettes, you can relive the times of the mysterious prehistoric builders of the dolmen. The Hunebed Centre lies next to the biggest dolmen in the Netherlands.
There are dolmens some 15 km from Center Parcs Huttenheugte, and the Hunebed centre lies some 35 km away.

Coevorden
The best way to relive the history of the ancient town of Coevorden is to take a walk in the town. You’ll pass some wonderful spots in this former fortified town. In the centre of the town lies a castle, which is definitely worth a visit.
You can learn more about the history of Coevorden in the Drenthe's Veste museum. The maquette of the fortified town is the jewel in the crown of the collection, and shows in detail what the situation was like in the beginning of 19th century.

Experience the purity of nature in Bargerveen peat reserve
In the Bargerveen peat reserve, you can cycle or walk for hours without meeting a soul. It’s the ideal spot if you want to enjoy the varied flora and fauna of the province of Drenthe in peace and solitude. On your journey, stop past lakes and woods and observe the butterflies, dragonflies, birds, frogs and lizards.
And experience the bouncy nature of the peat by wading through the wet and open terrain in your boots.
The 2,100-hectare Bargerveen is the last remnant of the Bourtanger morass, which was originally some 3,000 km2 in size In the 19th century, this area was a vital one for industries as a location for extracting peat. Right up until the 1930s, peat was still being used as a source of energy. In 2006, the Bargerveen became part of the 40 km² Internationaler Naturpark Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen. This area of outstanding natural beauty is a haven for rare plants and animals.
