Bargerveen Nature Reserve
Back to the listIn the Bargerveen peat reserve, you can cycle or walk for hours without meeting a soul. It's the ideal spot if you want to enjoy the varied flora and fauna of the province of Drenthe in peace and solitude. On your journey, stop past lakes and woods and observe the butterflies, dragonflies, birds, frogs and lizards.
And experience the bouncy nature of the peat by wading through the wet and open terrain in your boots.
The 2,100-hectare Bargerveen is the last remnant of the Bourtanger morass, which was originally some 3,000 km2 in size In the 19th century, this area was a vital one for industries as a location for extracting peat. Right up until the 1930s, peat was still being used as a source of energy. In 2006, the Bargerveen became part of the 40 km² Internationaler Naturpark Bourtanger Moor-Bargerveen. This area of outstanding natural beauty is a haven for rare plants and animals.
